For over 20 years now Lanzarote has been famous for being one of Europe's best surf destinations with its ability to seamlessly to provide powerful and constant swell to all its visitors.
Although the whole island is considered a hot-spot for great surf, undoubtedly the best swell is to be found in the north half of the island where both coasts (East & West) offering some legendary breaks.
It's the swell with the westerly and north directional force that when striking the west coasts gives great consistent waves. Conversely it's the southward swell that gives the east coast it's fareshare of classic breaks (although this southward bound east coast swell is more commonly found during the summer months). However it's not until the winter months roll in with its north-westerly swell that you'll see some of Lanzarote's biggest waves and at this time of year you'd be forgiven for thinking you were sitting off the coast of Hawaii (the swell really can get that big!).
The beach of Famara (where our apartments are based) is great for beginners and intermediates due to the way the coast curves nearly 90 degrees all the way round, creating varying sized swell in different directions. And for the advanced surfer amazing secret quiet spots can be found if you're willing to hire a 4x4 or simply don't mind a little trek over some of Europe's most picturesque scenery.
Due to the islands location you will find that most of your fellow surfer are of British origin and it's true to say that because of the legendary reputation and impact surf has here that there is still a great surfing comrade spirit that has been lost with other similar islands.
