Tokyo, Japan — Japan Airlines (JAL) has signed a significant purchase agreement with Airbus for an additional 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft and 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft. This move aligns with JAL’s strategic plan to modernize its fleet and enhance its service offerings. In a separate agreement, JAL has also signed with Boeing for up to ten additional 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, along with ten options, reflecting the airline’s commitment to expanding its long-haul fleet.

Fleet Expansion and Deployment Plans

Tokyo-based JAL will deploy the 20 additional A350-900s on international flights starting in 2027, complementing its existing fleet of larger A350-1000s. This addition aims to boost JAL’s global presence while maintaining high standards of passenger comfort and operational efficiency.

The Airbus A321 neos will gradually replace the ageing Boeing 767 aircraft currently operating on domestic routes from Haneda Airport, starting in 2028. This transition underscores JAL’s focus on modernizing its domestic fleet with more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft.

“We are delighted to announce the additional introduction of the A350-900 for international routes and the new introduction of the A321neo,” said Yukio Nakagawa, JAL’s Executive Procurement Officer. “By accelerating the introduction of the latest fuel-efficient aircraft, we aim to provide the highest level of service to our customers while advancing our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions.”

Dreamliner Expansion

The ten additional 787-9 Dreamliners will join JAL’s existing fleet, which already includes more than 50 787 aircraft, making JAL one of the largest Dreamliner operators globally. This expansion supports JAL’s strategy to leverage the Dreamliner’s range and efficiency to establish new point-to-point markets.

JAL’s 787 fleet has been instrumental in opening new routes from Tokyo to destinations such as San Diego, Boston, and Bangalore, demonstrating the aircraft’s versatility and long-range capabilities.

Once this new order is finalized and recorded on Boeing’s orders and deliveries website, JAL will have ten 787s and 21 737 Max jets on order, further solidifying its commitment to maintaining a modern and efficient fleet.
